Stop Waiting for Permission to Grow

You are waiting for someone who is not thinking about you.

That's not a dig. That's just the reality of how most workplaces operate. Your manager is managing a team, hitting targets, putting out fires you don't even know about. They are not lying awake at night strategizing about how to unlock your full potential.

And yet, most of us are living our careers exactly like that's their job.

It's called the permission trap. And if you've ever told yourself "I'll invest in myself after this project wraps" or "once things calm down I'll focus on growing"... you're in it.

The Exhaustion Excuse (and Why It's Only Half True)

Here's where it gets real: the tiredness is legitimate. By 6pm, most of us barely have the bandwidth to answer our kids' hundredth question of the day. The idea of sitting down with a course, a book, or even a podcast can feel like one more thing on an already impossible list.

But some of that exhaustion isn't just the grind. Some of it is the slow drain of doing work that isn't going anywhere. Work without direction. Work that could, honestly, be done by someone else, or something else, if we took the time to figure that out.

And here's the paradox: growth actually creates energy. Not immediately. But it gives you something to move toward. The problem is it's hard to see that from inside the fog.

The Story That Changes Everything

In the episode, I share a story about a client who had spent 10 years in the same role. Successful by every external measure. But completely, quietly, bored out of his mind.

What happened next, and the surprising reason his energy completely transformed even though he ended up doing more work, is something you need to hear to believe.

Three Ways to Take Back Your Growth (Without Burning Out)

In the podcast, I break down three specific moves you can make right now, and the third one is, as I say on the show, a little spicy.

Here's a teaser:

  • Move 1 is about completely reframing what "growth" actually looks like day to day. Hint: it has nothing to do with courses or certifications.

  • Move 2 is about getting ruthlessly specific because vague intentions produce exactly one thing, and it's not results.

  • Move 3 is the one nobody wants to hear but everyone needs to. It involves a hard truth about what your employer actually promised you when they hired you.

All three are in the episode and I go deep on each one.

What AI Has to Do With All of This

There's a thread running through this episode that surprised even me when I said it out loud. It's about technology, AI, and the skills that are going to matter five years from now and what happens to the people who are still waiting for someone to hand them a development plan when that moment arrives.

I'll admit something personal in the episode too. Something I've been avoiding. And it's exactly the kind of thing this conversation is about.

The Permission You've Been Waiting For

No one is coming to save your career.

That sounds harsh. I mean it as a gift.

Because the moment you really absorb that, you stop being a passenger and you start being the driver. You stop waiting for the tap on the shoulder and you start building the thing you actually want.

You already have everything you need to start. The permission was yours all along.
